Reservation and affirmative action
Also called: quota, reservation, obc, scheduled caste, scheduled tribe
Reservation in education, employment and legislatures is the Constitution's principal instrument of affirmative action, permitted as an exception to formal equality. Its extent, its beneficiaries and the 50 per cent ceiling are continuously litigated.
